"Pilio’s comprehensive carbon footprint tool and approach has given us a scientifically robust approach to measure our full carbon emissions, set our trajectory to net zero, and design a department carbon scheme that will drive our organisational decision-making to meet our commitment to the climate emergency by 2027."

The opportunity for
heritage

Heritage organisations are custodians of our past for present and future generations to understand the journey of humanity. This opens up opportunities for understanding how societies worked and how they related to the natural world around them, therefore creating space for exchange and consideration for creating the societies of today and tomorrow.

For heritage organisations to explore and exercise their agency in addressing sustainability challenges requires of them commitment, understanding, and improvement.

Our work with
Blenheim Palace

Over the last five years Pilio has been supporting the development and implementation of a sustainability strategy for Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Estate, which together sit on twelve thousand acres in Oxfordshire.

In 2019, Blenheim declared a climate emergency and set a target to be net carbon negative by 2027.

Net carbon negative by 2027

To support Blenheim Palace in meeting their net carbon negative target, Pilio has provided:

  • Energy management of all properties

  • ESOS compliance

  • Carbon footprinting of the visitor attraction

  • A net zero carbon roadmap

  • Biodiversity and ecological assessment

  • Partnering on a DEFRA Test & Trials project

  • Partnering on developing innovative mechanisms to incentivise nature based solutions on landed estates

  • Assessing the embodied carbon emissions from their home building business, PYE Homes

  • Providing sustainability expertise across the organisation in support of implementing the environmental policy

Getting started

Pilio will work with your heritage organisation to devise a credible and robust sustainability policy and set of targets for your site, which will create a framework for you to reach net zero and meet other key goals. Our specialists will work with you across departmental teams from visitor experience to historic conservation to land managers.
