Carbon Negative Dairy

Client: Godminster Farm, Somerset
Sector: Agriculture – Organic Dairy

Challenge

  • Organic dairy farm (372 hectares, 300+ cows).

  • Needed to measure full climate impact (emissions + sequestration).

  • Pressure to prove sustainability credentials to customers.

  • Wanted a credible baseline and roadmap for future improvements.

Our Approach

  • Carbon audit (2020/21) following GHG Protocol & ISO 14061.

  • Collected data on livestock, land use, feed, energy, and transport.

  • Assessed Scope 1–3 emissions (cattle, energy, waste, procurement).

  • Measured carbon sequestration: 25,000 trees, hedgerows, ponds, regenerative soil.

  • Ran scenario testing (slurry biodigestion, feed sourcing, pasture expansion).

Results to Date

  • Emissions: 1,949 tCO₂e/year.

  • Sequestration: 2,824 tCO₂e/year.

  • Net balance: –875 tCO₂e/year (carbon negative).

  • Soil tests showed higher carbon storage than regional farms.

  • Financial upside: sequestration value £18k–£57k/year (carbon credits potential).

Client Impact

  • Independent validation of regenerative practices.

  • Stronger sustainability story for brand and customers.

  • Clear roadmap for reducing emissions further.

  • Positioned as a leader in organic dairy and cheese markets..

Takeaway

Rigorous carbon audits give farms a credible baseline, validate regenerative claims, and unlock both reputational and commercial benefits.
