What is ESOS?

 

ESOS stands for Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme. It is a mandated scheme in the UK which requires large companies to accredit their building and transport energy and put in place reduction plans.

Is your company required to comply with ESOS? 

 

Your company has to comply with ESOS if it meets at least one of the following criteria:

​

• 250+ employees 

• An annual turnover in excess of £44 million, and an annual balance sheet total in excess of £38 million

​

What is involved in ESOS?

​

• Building energy surveys

• Calculate total energy consumption

​

The total energy consumption must be calculated over a reference period of 12 consecutive months and the reference period must include the qualification date and end before the compliance date. 

 

What are the key dates for ESOS compliance?

There is a new phase every 4 years.  It is currently the compliance period for Phase 3.

For ESOS Phase 3, the following are the relevant dates:

​

• 31 Dec 2022 — Qualification Date

• 6 Dec 2019 – 5 Dec 2023 — Compliance period

• 5 Dec 2023 — Compliance Date

 
The first date a Phase 3 ESOS can be completed is the 1st January 2023 but preparatory work and buildings surveys can be performed before.  There are advantages to completing early —not least avoiding the ‘rush’ when it is difficult to find a Lead Assessor.
